Win a Date with Edith

Edith is supporting a campaign I have going on kickstarter (see right sidebar). I am commissioning 4 songs from a great, young NYC composer: Clint Borzoni. In order to do this project, I need $1,100 pledged by September 15th. As of this posting, I’m at 50% funding. It’s an all or nothing deal.

So, if you want a date with Edith, my baby girl and pug, pledge $150. I will chaperone the date, as she is too young to go on a “car date.” So, it’s a two for one deal!

For a Rainy, Gloomy Sunday

A little cheer from this past Thursday’s lunch in Gramercy Park. This is one of the many red tulips in bloom.

Edith Pugsworth Hill, III and her Daddy

In January, I adopted the most adorable pug (in my humble opinion). Edith has really made my life complete. Recently, I had the fortune to have my photography mentor, Dara Blakeley, visit me in NYC and do some photography of me and my girl in our home.

Dara is a children and wedding photographer based in Raleigh/Cary, NC. She is a great artist, and the best friend I could ever hope to have.

Spring/Summer Discount Returns

I have been noticing the weather turning warmer every day. With that comes thoughts of spring and summer…and summer opera programs…and summer stock theater. I would like to remind you to book your sittings early if you want shots ready for the summer season. Often photographers can get booked up, or backed up with their editing load in the big spring/summer crunch.

This spring and summer, I will continue to offer $200 off of my deluxe package. I also would like you to know custom packages are available. Email me with the details of what you need and I can customize a package to fit.

Tips for Choosing a Starter DSLR

Often, I am asked for my opinion of a good place to start when buying into the DSLR world. Here’s the advice I give anyone considering a DSLR:

1. If you are not sure DSLR is for you, but you are interested in trying it, start with a cheaper body (something like the Nikon D40). These are good starter cameras. The more expensive the body, the better the sensor, the better the camera will do with low light situations.

2. Remember that when you buy a DSLR, you are not just buying a camera, but buying into a camera system. So when you purchase, you will probably be with this brand forever. I recommend either Nikon (my brand) or Canon. They are both very good. Check out both. The software and the controls are slightly different and one will probably feel more intuitive than another. You can try out a camera by borrowing from a friend, or going into a store.

3. Spend your money on lenses (glass). A good lens will give you great shots…no matter what body you are using. These lenses will be transferrable to a new body if you ever decide to upgrade and stay within the same brand. BUT, they are not usable between brands (i.e., a Canon lens will not fit a Nikon body, BUT, a lens that fits a Nikon D40 will also fit the most expensive professional-level Nikon body).

4. Have fun with your new camera!

Jeannine Hebb Performs

Saturday, February 13, 2010
8:00pm – 9:00pm
Caffe Vivaldi
32 Jones Street
New York, NY

If you like the music on my website, then you have heard Jeannine’s music. Now, you can hear Jeannine live in this upcoming performance! She was very kind in sharing her music with me and I would love to get the word out there for her every time she performs. Oh, and by the way, the performance is a budget busting $0…yep…FREE! It’s a short set (only an hour), but there are two other groups performing that night, and it looks like something not to be missed!

Tim Hill, “A Fixture On The NYC Opera Scene”

Sooo, tomorrow night, I am singing a fundraiser with Opera On Tap. We are raising money for Doctors without Borders, specifically to aid the Haiti crisis.

Yesterday, I get a message from a friend: “Time Out New York has called you New York opera scene fixture.” So, I think this is pretty darned cool–I’m something like an antique chair when it comes to opera in NYC. <grin> Here’s the link: Time Out New York. Not sure how long it will be up.

The concert is Wednesday, February 3, starting at 8:00 pm at the Parkside Lounge. Come out and support this great effort!

If you can’t get the link–here is a screen capture of the blurb.

I took Darlene’s headshots as she was starting her funding campaign. All of us at tim hill images are proud of her. Congratulations Darlene, I can’t wait to read your book!

Getting the Best Out of Your Social Media/Networking Avatars

With the rise in Social Media Networking, it has become very important to have several photos that you can use as your profile picture (your “avatar”). This is the image that everyone first sees when your profile appears in a search, or when viewing your personal page. Every social networking site uses them. Profile pictures allow someone searching you to confirm they have chosen the right person. (Think of someone searching for Tim Hill—there are many Tim Hill’s in the world, and many of us are photographers.)

I believe it is best to have a portfolio of images you can use on the varying sites. LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter all have different audiences and different “feels.” I think it is best to have a professional look to your LinkedIn profile, and something that shows more of your own personality on Facebook and Twitter.

Keep in mind that while Facebook and Twitter are not geared strictly for “doing business,” you should have a presence on each. On these sites, you really want to appear approachable. Personality is everything on these sites.

Below are a few examples of photos I have used on different sites this past year:
